By using a series of strokes and techniques specifically chosen for infants, infant massage closely connects and bonds both mother and father with their baby in a beautiful and natural way. It is a framework whereby parent/child interaction allows for understanding, and builds trust and attachment. It instills self-confidence, especially amongst first time parents, and allows the parents to engage intimately and learn the cues of their child. The massage is done at a time when the baby is quietly engaged. The instructor will teach the parents the physiological and psychological importance of infant massage, as well as its place in history and society.
Healthy, nurturing touch allows children to learn and know the difference between good touch and bad touch. The initial visit will provide the introduction of massage to your child, along with a fun, simple lesson that the parent, guardian or caregiver will learn. Subsequent visits will provide more learning of massage techniques and strokes. A child doesn’t need to have a medical condition or have been hospitalized to benefit from massage therapy. Any child can benefit from massage therapy. Children need nurturing touch in order to grow and reach their full potential. Massage has been shown to provide comfort for such things as growing pains, anxiety, stress and aggression. It may also deepen sleep, improve concentration/focus and improve self-image. Some researchers even report that children who have received massage therapy on a regular basis may show an increased IQ.
This instruction is provided by a Certified Massage Therapist (CMT) who is certified in infant massage instruction and pediatric massage therapy. Prior to instruction the therapist gathers detailed medical information and has direct communication with the child’s primary care physician. The instruction is personalized for the special health care needs of the infant/child. This provides the best care and optimal massage program for the parents, guardian or caregiver to give their child.
A Certified Infant Massage Instructor (CIMI) is a professional who holds a valid state license that allows said professional to take the instructor course. The infant massage instructor course created by International Loving Touch Foundation Inc. is advanced and its model is relationship-based and family-centered. It promotes the idea that infants and their families are collaborators in developing an individualized program of support that maximizes physical, mental, and emotional growth, health and other positive outcomes for all infants and children, from the well–baby to the special needs infant.
A massage therapist or other health care professional, who has received specific advanced training to enhance their skills in providing pediatric massage therapy.
